How votes, comparisons & privacy work

Effective October 8, 2026. Town Pulse asks curated questions and shows aggregate answer counts. It is an informal opinion project, not an official election or a statistically representative poll.

A random browser cookie lets you change your answer without adding a second vote. The poll database stores that identifier, your answer, and the ZIP you enter. Short-lived request counters limit rapid voting by browser and, when available from our hosting service, by a hashed network address. Town Pulse does not store raw IP addresses in its voting database. These counters expire after two minutes and are removed during subsequent voting activity; they are separate from vote records. It does not ask for your name, email, or street address. Your individual vote record and browser identifier are not displayed publicly. Results can include very small groups, so they may reflect only one or a few participants.

Town Pulse also records daily aggregate page views, approximate browser sessions, edition and category activity, screen-size groups, and referral hostnames. Traffic counters do not store visitor profiles, raw IP addresses, full referral URLs, or individual answers, and respect browser Do Not Track signals. Short-lived hashed counters limit excessive reporting.

All towns includes the selected local area. Votes made before ZIP recording was introduced remain in overall totals but are excluded from ZIP results until the participant votes again. ZIPs are self-reported; residence and unique people are not verified. Browser cookies and request limits reduce simple repeat voting and flooding, but do not guarantee one vote per person. Shared networks are allowed to have multiple participants. We do not ask about citizenship or immigration status. Percentages are rounded.

Changing a vote updates its answer and ZIP for that question. Clearing the cookie removes this browser’s ability to retrieve or change previous answers; it does not delete stored votes. Town Pulse does not add advertising trackers or sell poll data. Do Not Track does not disable the cookie needed for voting. Hosting and browser services have their own privacy practices.
